The Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus, Best of Both Worlds Concert is a musical documentary film from Walt Disney Pictures shown in Disney Digital 3-D.
The limited release was intended to be for one week, February 1-7, 2008 (Super Bowl weekend) in the US and Canada with release in other countries later on, but then was extended for viewing as long as theatres wanted.
Disney recently announced the concert was filmed in several cities to be released in the US in February and to the rest of the world throughout the month. The movie viewers get to wear 3-D glasses to watch the movie in 3-D.
It was the number one movie of the weekend, more than doubling the receipts of the number two movie, “The Eye”. Opening in only 638 theaters, it set a record of over $42,000 per theater. It also set a record for the highest revenue for a 3-D movie for one weekend. Finally, it set a record for gross revenue for a Super Bowl weekend.
The film shows Miley Cyrus on her Best of Both Worlds Tour as Hannah Montana, with film clips taken from her performance in Salt Lake City, Utah. Behind-the-scenes clips are shown also, showing the conversion from Hannah Montana to Miley Cyrus backstage, and the atmosphere of the production. It is noted that there’s no connection with the television series since this is a concert combined with documentary elements.
Critics gave the film pretty much favorable reviews. As of February 19, 2008, the review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes reported that 85% of critics gave the film positive reviews, based on 26 reviews. Metacritic reported the film had an average score of 59 out of 100, based on 13 reviews.
The 3D Hannah Montana movie brought in $8,651,758 on its opening day, and continued on to have $31,117,834 in ticket sales to finish off the weekend, making it the highest-grossing opening weekend for a film to be released on less than 1000 screens.
- The movie is not only the highest-grossing 3D movie 3-Day release, its also the highest-grossing concert movie and highest opening weekend during Super Bowl Weekend.
The following Monday, it pulled in $3,253,205. Among films that had fewer than 1,000 screens on opening day, the film ranked second only behind Borat. Hannah opened with $8.6 million on 683 screens and Borat opened with $9.2 million on 837 screens.
- It averaged $45,560 per screen in its opening weekend, giving it the highest average per theater of all time for a limited release film.
At last count, total Box Office sales are up to $61,951,322! That’s almost 62 million dollars!!!
